The process of planning a family photoshoot can be a bit daunting, as there are so many details to consider: finding a photographer, scheduling the day/time, figuring out the location, coordinating outfits, etc. At Macaroni KID Bel Air, we understand that your time is valuable, so we've taken out some of the guesswork in this process. The local photographers in this guide are also parents, and they have some tricks up their sleeves to make the most of your photo sessions!
5 Tips for Family Photography Sessions:
Plan Ahead
Many photographers schedule bookings months in advance, so keep this in mind when you are looking at your calendar. Consider what you may need family photos for, such as holiday cards, prints for yourself, or gifts for others. Also keep in mind the turnaround time for editing and returning photos, as this can take up to several weeks.
Determine a Location
The location of your family photo session may change throughout different seasons. Some photographers have their own studios or specific locations where they take photos. If you're chasing the fall colors or the blooms in the springtime, you may need to be flexible on the days/times you choose, and ensure that the photographer you work with is accommodating.
Plan Outfits in Advance
Your outfits will largely depend on the time of year and location of your photos. Most photographers suggest coordinating outfits based on a specific color scheme, rather than matching completely. Some photographers have their own guides for choosing outfits effectively.
Don’t Come Hungry
The last thing you want to deal with at a photoshoot is a hangry child (or adult!) who won’t cooperate for photos. If you choose to bring snacks, aim for small, non-messy items that can be eaten quickly and discreetly between shots. Don’t forget to hydrate!

Arrive Before Your Scheduled Time
Arrive a few minutes before your scheduled photo session time, especially if you are doing a mini session that is dependent on punctuality. Consider the parking situation, bathroom options if any, potential traffic, and any other factors that may influence your arrival time.
