Do you find yourself dreading the evenings because of homework battles? Is your child becoming negative about school? Are you concerned about a drop in grades? You are NOT alone. It’s probably time to consider getting some outside help. Here are some helpful tips to consider when looking for supplemental education and tutoring support:
1. Look for individualized programs
Customized tutoring programs are most effective at helping students catch up or improve certain skills. Your child’s tutor should first perform an evaluation to determine their areas of strength and weakness. With that information, they can create a personalized learning program that will target their needs and help them achieve their goals.
2. Get an understanding of the tutor’s training and certifications
While you might have good luck hiring a smart high school or college student in your neighborhood to tutor your child in math, you’d be better off having them work with an experienced teacher. Look for a tutor who is trained, has teaching experience and is state-certified. If you are exploring a tutoring company, ask about any accreditations they hold.
3. Learn about the tutoring methodology
Don’t begin any tutoring program without first asking what makes the tutor or tutoring center successful with students. What is their track record? How are students’ strengths and weaknesses pinpointed before the tutor begins instruction? Do they teach reading using the Science of Reading? Making certain the teacher is using research-based methods is critical to your child’s success.
4. Make sure they have a plan to support the “whole child”
While every child learns differently, some children are also tackling school with specific learning disabilities, like dyslexia or ADHD. Make sure that the tutor has a plan for how to teach your child based upon their learning differences.
5. How will they measure progress and communicate with you?
Progress monitoring is important. While seeing an increase in grades is surely one measure of success, providing interim testing should also be performed. Updated evaluations help to not only measure progress in a quantitative way, but also allows for continued individualization of the student’s instruction.
